One Day in Milan: The Duomo, the Galleria and Coffee With a View

One day in Milan is enough for the city's two big sights, the Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, which stand side by side, plus a coffee with a view of the cathedral. Milan was part of my two-week Italy trip in the summer of 2026, and even the jet bridge felt like a runway.

The plan at a glance

  • Morning: the Duomo di Milano and its rooftop terraces
  • Midday: the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, next door
  • Afternoon: coffee on a terrace facing the cathedral

The Duomo di Milano and its rooftop

Milan's cathedral took nearly six centuries to finish, and you can see why up close: almost every surface is carved, and the roof is a forest of spires. Buy a ticket that includes the terraces and walk among the spires on the roof. You can take the stairs or the lift.

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

Right next to the Duomo is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, a 19th-century shopping arcade under a glass-and-iron roof. It might be the fanciest mall on earth. Even if you are not shopping, walk through for the dome, the mosaic floors and the painted arches. Look for the mosaic bull under the central dome: local tradition says spinning on your heel on it brings good luck.

Coffee with a view of the Duomo

My coffee in Milan came with a view: a cappuccino on a terrace facing the cathedral, right at the height of its windows and spires. Several terraces around Piazza del Duomo look straight at it, including the rooftop food hall at La Rinascente, the department store beside the cathedral.

Getting to Milan

Milan is Italy's big northern hub, with two main airports, Malpensa and Linate, and fast trains from Milano Centrale to Venice, Florence and Rome. That makes it an easy first or last stop on an Italy trip. I visited it along with Venice and Tuscany, traveling for two weeks with a single personal item.

Common questions

Yes. Tickets that include the terraces let you walk on the roof among the spires, by stairs or by lift.
What is the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II?
A 19th-century shopping arcade next to the Duomo, under a glass-and-iron roof and dome, with shops, cafés and mosaic floors.
